Find the right route for you

School leavers

Start your career in accountancy without going to university. AIA offers a flexible pathway that allows you to begin studying after A-levels (or equivalent) while gaining practical experience.

You will access AIA’s dedicated learning platform, with e-tutors, structured study plans, mock exams, and a wide range of resources to support your progress.

Graduates and part-qualified accountants

If you have already completed some accountancy studies, AIA offers exemptions to help you progress faster. We assess your existing academic and professional qualifications on an individual basis and apply paper-for-paper exemptions where appropriate.

This approach reduces duplication and provides a more efficient route to achieving full qualification and membership.

Qualified accountants

If you already hold a recognised professional qualification and have relevant experience, you may be eligible for direct membership of AIA.

We offer entry at Associate (AAIA) or Fellow (FAIA) level on a like-for-like basis, allowing you to gain AIA membership quickly and enhance your professional recognition.

Accountants in practice

If you run or plan to start your own practice, an AIA practising certificate gives you the authority to operate and demonstrates your professionalism and compliance.

You will also gain access to specialist support, guidance, and resources designed to help small and medium-sized practices grow and succeed.

Entry Requirements

To register as a student, you typically need at least two A-level passes and three GCSE passes (or equivalent), including Maths and English.

If you are unsure whether you meet the requirements, we encourage you to get in touch for guidance on your eligibility and next steps.

Membership Progression

AIA provides a clear progression route that supports you throughout your career in accountancy.

As an AIA Student, you demonstrate your commitment to professional development while completing your studies and Initial Professional Development (IPD). After completing your exams, you progress to Graduate status while continuing to build your practical experience.

Once you meet all requirements, you can apply for Associate membership (AAIA) and become a fully qualified accountant. With further experience, you can progress to Fellow membership (FAIA), recognising your expertise and leadership in the profession.

AIA also offers Academic Membership for individuals working in recognised universities or colleges.

Student: You are working towards the AIA Professional Qualification while completing your Initial Professional Development (IPD).

Graduate: You have completed your professional exams and are gaining the required IPD to achieve full membership.

Associate (AAIA): You have completed all qualification requirements and are a fully qualified accountant, entitled to use the designation International Accountant.

Fellow (FAIA): You are a qualified accountant with at least five years’ post-qualification experience, recognised for your advanced expertise and professionalism.
